Competitors may choose to receive a credit voucher for a future NEWBREED event when canceling their registration by 5:00 PM on the Friday before the event.
To cancel, log in to your Smoothcomp account and cancel your registration before the deadline.
You do not need to contact the NEWBREED office to receive or use your credit voucher.
Credit vouchers may be used at any NEWBREED event nationwide.
Credit vouchers do not expire.
No credit vouchers will be issued after 5:00 PM on the Friday before the event.
What happens if a competitor does not make weight?
NEWBREED provides a 1-pound weight allowance for all competitors.
If a competitor of any age does not make weight, we will make every effort to place them into an appropriate available bracket.
If a suitable bracket is available, the competitor will be moved into that division.
If no appropriate bracket is available, the competitor will be issued a credit voucher for future use.
No refunds will be issued for competitors who do not make weight.
Can divisions be combined and how are female youth competitors bracketed?
NEWBREED reserves the right to combine or separate divisions based on competitor turnout in order to create the most appropriate brackets possible.
Female youth competitors 17 years of age and under may be bracketed with male competitors.
A parent or coach may request that a female youth competitor be matched only with other female competitors. This request can be entered in the Notes section during registration.
Requests for female-only competition will be considered, but cannot be guaranteed, as availability depends on the number and placement of registered competitors.
How do I purchase spectator tickets?
Adult spectator tickets — $20
Available for purchase on Smoothcomp or at the door.
Youth spectator tickets, ages 6–12 — $15
Available at the door only.
Children ages 5 and under — Free
How do I get my free t-shirt?
Competitors who register during the Super Early Bird or Early Bird Registration periods will receive a free event T-shirt.
T-shirts can be picked up at the NEWBREED merchandise table during the tournament.
How do I view my bracket?
Brackets and the event schedule are typically published on Smoothcomp the day before the tournament.
You will receive an email notification when the event schedule and bracket information are available.
To view your bracket, log in to your Smoothcomp account, select the event, and open the “Brackets & Schedule” tab.
Smoothcomp is the primary source for the most current bracket, match time, and schedule information.
What does the letter and number next to my match mean?
On Smoothcomp, each match is labeled with a letter and number.
The letter identifies the mat where your match will take place.
The number indicates the order of your match on that mat.
For example, A1 is the first match on Mat A, while D22 is the 22nd match on Mat D.
Competitors should continue to check Smoothcomp throughout the event for the most current match and mat information.
How is the Novice division different?
Novice divisions are designed for Youth 1 competitors with limited experience.
Submissions are not permitted in Novice divisions.
Matches are won by scoring points through actions such as takedowns, sweeps, positional control, and other scoring techniques.
Can the voucher/credit be used for any event or only Newbreed events?
How do I change or cancel my registration?
Competitors may make changes to their registration until 5:00 PM on the Friday before the event.
To make changes, log in to your Smoothcomp account, select the event, and update your registration.
After 5:00 PM on Friday, registrations are finalized and no further division or registration changes will be permitted.
If you need assistance making a change, email info@newbreedbjj.com as soon as possible and before the 5:00 PM Friday deadline.
If you choose not to compete, you may cancel your registration through Smoothcomp by 5:00 PM on Friday and select the applicable refund or credit voucher option.
How do I register for absolute divisions?
When is the registration deadline?
Regular Registration Deadline: Tuesday before the tournament. Athletes are encouraged to register by this deadline.
Final Registration Deadline: 5:00 PM on the Friday before the tournament.
No registrations will be accepted after the 5:00 PM Friday deadline.
Day-of registration is not available.
How do I use a coupon code?
Coupon and promo codes are applied through Smoothcomp during the registration process.
If you have received a coupon or credit for a future event, log in to your Smoothcomp account and check the “Your Coupons” section.
If you received a promo or coupon code by email or text, enter the code during registration before completing payment.
Coupon and promo codes must be applied before checkout is completed.
What if there is no one else in my division?
If there are no other competitors in your division, you may choose to move up in age or weight to find an available match.
Competitors in the Masters or Executive age divisions may also choose to move down to the Adult division.

When do I weigh-in?
Weigh-ins are typically held on Saturday. Select tournaments may also offer Friday afternoon weigh-ins. When available, Friday weigh-in details will be announced in advance and listed on the specific event information page.
Youth weigh-ins begin at 8:00 AM.
Adult weigh-ins begin at 10:00 AM.
Adult competitors must weigh in at least 60 minutes before their division begins.
If I sign up for gi do I get no-gi for free?
How do I win the NJJF Champion belt?
Championship belts are awarded to 1st-place winners in Advanced divisions.
Adult Gi: Purple, Brown, and Black Belt divisions.
Adult No-Gi: Advanced divisions.
Youth Gi: Orange, Green, and Blue Belt divisions.
Youth No-Gi: Advanced divisions.
If a competitor wins multiple Advanced divisions, they will receive one championship belt and gold medals for each additional division won.
Are teens allowed in the absolute division?
The Adult Absolute division is intended for competitors ages 18 and older.
In limited cases, an exception may be considered for a competitor under the age of 18.
To request an exception, the competitor or parent/guardian must email info@newbreedbjj.com and receive authorization from the NEWBREED office before the event.
Approval will be based on factors including the competitor’s age, experience, and skill level.
If an under-18 competitor is approved, written consent from a parent or legal guardian will be required before they may compete.
Approval is not guaranteed and is granted at the discretion of NEWBREED.
Can black belts compete for free?
Black belt competitors may compete free of charge at any NEWBREED tournament.

Once verified, you will receive a personalized Smoothcomp registration code to use when registering for the event.
